This conference will address the pending completion of the human genome sequencing project, and the resultant change in the focus of quantitative studies of genomic information from the gathering and archiving of genomic data to its analysis and use in prediction and discovery. Key to this new era is research across many disciplinary interfaces, the development and utilization of new quantitative tools, and the training of individuals who are comfortable and equipped to work at these evolving interfaces. The symposium is intended to provide an international forum for provocative discussions debating the current state-of-the-art and envisioning future directions for the application of quantitative science to sequence-to-function paradigms in biology. The primary workshop focus will be the training and exposure of developing interdisciplinary scientists to the many new challenges beyond genome sequencing, and to varied approaches to pursuing scientific careers at the interfaces between the physical/chemical/computational and biological sciences.
The La Jolla Interfaces in Science,
LJIS, will be hosting a two day
workshop
on Tuesday, January 11 and Wednesday, January 12 followed by a three day
international symposium on Thursday, January
13 - Saturday, January 15.
Wednesday, September 1 - abstracts for contributed talks
Monday, November 1 - abstracts for posters
Monday, November 15 - last day for
early registration $50 discount
The registration fees will cover the expenses associated with the daily continental breakfasts, conference breaks, registration and poster session receptions, workshop dinner on Tuesday evening, symposium dinner on Saturday evening, and the Friday afternoon social activity.
The fee for registrations postmarked
no later than Monday, November 15 will be $600 for the workshop and
symposium and $400 for the symposium only. The fee for registrations

LJIS has travel funds available to cover the registration fee, airfare, and double accommodations for all of The Burroughs Wellcome Fund "Interfaces" Fellows. If you are a BWF fellow and you have not received your invitation, please have your program administrator contact Cheri Brooks, cbrooks@ucsd.edu.
LJIS has ten travel stipends available
for other young researchers to attend the workshop and symposium if they
are presenting either a contributed talk or poster. These stipends
will cover the awardees' registration fees and shared accommodations.
If you would like to be considered for one of these stipends, please indicate
your interest on the cover sheet that accompanies your abstract.
The workshop and symposium will be held in at the Wyndham
Emerald Plaza Hotel in the heart of downtown San Diego's historic Gas Lamp
Quarter. Conveniently situated within walking distance of world class
shopping, dining, and entertainment, the Wyndham Emerald Plaza offers convenience
as well as luxury with its 100-foot-high glass atrium lobby, beautiful
indoor reflecting pools, glass elevators and contemporary sculpture.
A special conference rate of $169
single or double has been negotiated at the Wyndham Emerald Plaza Hotel.
To take advantage of this special conference rate, you must identify yourself
as a LJIS'2000 participant. If you are not receiving a travel stipend
for the conference, then you should contact the Wyndham directly to make
your reservation. Their phone number is 1-619-239-4500. If
you are interested in sharing a room with another participant, then please
send email to ljis2000@ucsd.edu.
In addition to invited
speakers, there will be ten-twelve fifteen minute contributed talks
during the symposium, January 13 - 15, 2000. These brief talks will
spotlight the projects of workshop participants and other young researchers.
Contributed talks included in the program will be selected by the local
organizing committee based on abstracts received prior to the Wednesday,
September 1 deadline. Abstracts
should be sent to: LJIS2000, 9500 Gilman Drive MC 0319, La Jolla,
CA 92093-0319. Abstracts may be faxed to LJIS2000 at 858-534-7697
to comply with the deadline, however, hardcopy or electronic files must
also be sent. The abstracts for the contributed talks will be published
in the conference program. All abstracts will be reproduced exactly
as they are submitted.
There will be poster sessions following the roundtable
discussions on the evenings of Thursday, January 13 and Friday, January
14. Researchers will be invited to present a poster by the local
organizing committee based on abstracts received prior to the Monday,
November 1 deadline. All fellows and junior researchers are
strongly encouraged to utilize this opportunity to showcase their work.
Abstracts should be sent to:
LJIS2000, 9500 Gilman Drive MC 0319, La Jolla, CA 92093-0319.
Abstracts may be faxed to LJIS2000 at 858-534-7697 to comply with the deadline,
however, a hardcopy must also be sent for it to be considered. The
abstracts for the contributed talks will be published in the conference
program. All abstracts will be reproduced exactly as they are
submitted.
Abstracts for the featured contributed talks and posters will be published in the conference program book. All abstracts will be reproduced exactly as they are submitted. Each abstract should be accompanied by a cover sheet that includes the presenter's name, U.S. postal address, electronic address, URL address, phone number, and fax number. Abstracts must:

January 13-15, 1999) will have a theme. These themes are listed below
together with presentation areas. In addition to invited
speakers, there will be ten-twelve contributed talks, intended to spotlight

How far can we get with present day technologies?
What further technological advances will help?
What do we understand theoretically and experimentally about the physical mechanisms that determine structure?
Is the current level of knowledge of these mechanisms together with existent structural information sufficient to predict all novel structures using the genomic data?
How much about function can be understood directly from
structures and sequences?
